Abstract:

This is a game.

Its purpose is to help people to:

  • become familiar with some concepts in a given field, often presented as dichotomies; and
  • position themselves according to these concepts.

Of course, the concepts neither are found in reality in such a binary way nor are necessarily as opposed as they are presented here. That is, reality is grey, though it is here presented as a bunch of blacks and whites for the sake of pedagogy.

In this game we present 10 concepts related with the scholar/practitioner dichotomy (again, not a real binary thing). It is designed to help postgraduate students to find out their feelings or positionings before concepts that usually (and simplistically) describe the more or less opposing roles and tasks of a scholar and a practitioner.

This specific edition was used at the NITIM International Graduate Research School Winter School 2015: Doctoral Tailoring and Transitioning to Success, on November 11th, 2015, in La Salle, Barcelona.

Enjoy.
