Abstract:
The Campus Commons is an integrated online academic community founded by students and coordinators at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), and Holland College (HC), in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The Campus Commons is significant for several reasons. It is the first implementation of social software to deliver campus-wide blogging initiatives to two post-secondary institutions at once. It offers a free and easy to use personal publishing service to all ~8000 students, faculty, and administrators in the extended academic community. The individual web presences created using the Campus Commons are distinct in their own right, freely customizable, uniquely identifiable and empowering of independent personal expression. At the same time they may be used by members of the community to contribute, in a bottom-up fashion, to any number of distinct spaces which collect and organize topical, group, or course discussion. The service has been used to create and power additional services such as an online student newspaper and a multi-faceted media exchange and distribution service.
