To change system messages: Special:Allmessages
Mediawiki messages contain system labels or texts.
For example, to change the text from the home page, should edit MediaWiki:Mainpage
To change left navigation bar (ver. 1.4) edit LocalSettings.php, $wgNavigationLinks. More info:
