The institute aims at contributing to a better understanding of the interdependence between the society and the Internet and thus, offering an opportunity to shape the digital, networked future open to everyone. It shall encourage the dialogue between different research areas and disciplines and is based on the following guiding principles:

Transdisciplinary research and collaboration among scientists, political decisionmakers, civil society and the private sector,

The advance of a free and open internet and its potential, to further prosperity, strengthen democratic structures, as well as to promote science and culture based on the Kantian philosophy, of legal and orderly freedom of access, content and conduct,

Dissemination of an understanding of the internet that is focused on people and society,

Exploration of the characteristics, dynamics and the interplay of internet and society, governmental and non-governmental structures.
