Abstract:

The paper examines the evolving roles and spaces of Volunteering in the context of the Information Society, both from the perpective of how Volunteering contributes to the Information Society as well as how Information Society affects Volunteering itself. In particular, we will focus on ICT Volunteering as an asset for capacity development and Human Development, underscoring the value of volunteer action for capacity-building on ICT for development. Examples are provided of how volunteers of various sorts are contributing to bridge digital divides everywhere and generating digital inclusion. The paper also identifies options for volunteer-based networks within the new trends and practices of development cooperation.
